Exhibit Description
These frisky rubellite tourmaline bears were created by master gem carver Gerhard Becker, of Idar-Oberstein, Germany, as part of a series of miniature carvings of birds, mammals and fish native to North America. The bears, which are climbing on a piece of frosted rock crystal, were carved from a superb pocket of tourmaline uncovered at the Dunton Quarry, Newry Hill in the state of Maine in 1972.
