Washington D.C. Chapter: Diamond Myths & Misunderstandings

Antoinette Matlins will discuss the continuing and under-appreciated value of an ultraviolet lamp in distinguishing between natural & synthetic colorless (D-Z) diamonds as well as, other “facts" pertaining to diamonds and fluorescence that are myths and misunderstandings.

This presentation will be interactive and will demonstrate the mistakes many gemologists make when using an ultraviolet lamp, leading to erroneous conclusions. Participants will learn how to use a UV lamp correctly when checking diamonds (or other gems) for fluorescence and engage in a discussion of the other issues that are misunderstood when it comes to diamonds and fluorescence pertaining to beauty, color-grading, and valuation.

Gemstones, UV lamp and diamond “type spotters” for the synthetic diamond detection part of the presentation will be provided. Members should bring their Chelsea filters, calcite dichroscopes, and loupes (you will find the “new uses” fascinating and eye-opening).
