GIA’s Calling on London for Jewellery Week
Institute to host gem talks and more on June 14
LONDON – May 29, 2013 – The creativity and passion amongst London’s designers, retailers and manufacturers drives an innovative jewellery scene, which will be in top gear during the city-wide Jewellery Week, June 7-16. Building on the celebration’s creative excitement, GIA’s (Gemological Institute of America) London campus will host an “Open Day” on June 14.“We welcome everyone with a passion for gems and jewellery to stop by Open Day to learn about GIA’s education programmes and how many successful professionals in the U.K. and abroad have kickstarted their careers here,” said Edward Johnson, director of GIA in London. “As a U.K. Registered Charity and a global public benefit organisation, it is our endeavour to help the public learn more about gems and jewellery. Jewellery Week is a great vehicle to do just that.”
The seventh annual GIA Open Day events – all free of charge – will run from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, June 14. Presentations on gemmology, diamond quality factors, emeralds, rubies and sapphires, and pearls will complement demonstrations of GIA’s eLearning distance education programmes. Open classrooms featuring interactive gemmology and design lessons will also be available throughout the day. Staff will be on-hand to answer questions about GIA and the Institute’s education offerings.
GIA is an official event partner for Jewellery Week 2013, and will host the “GIA Trail” at Treasure, the largest public event of the week, taking place from June 13-16 at the iconic Somerset House. GIA’s Education Manager Mehdi Saadian will also speak at The Jewellery Show London on Tuesday, June 11 at Somerset House from 4:20 to 5 p.m. His lecture, “Beyond the 4Cs – Cut,” will explain how GIA grades the cut of a round brilliant diamond (including its brightness, fire, scintillation, polish and symmetry), and how cut greatly affects the overall look of a diamond.
