Mogul Emerald Sold for $2.2 Million

Mogul Emerald September 28, 2001 - One of the world's largest emeralds, a jewel dating back to the Mogul dynasty of India, has been sold at auction for $2.2 million. The Mogul emerald was purchased September 27 by an unnamed buyer at a sale of Indian art at Christie's of London. The 217.80 ct rectangular-cut emerald is elegantly inscribed with an Islamic prayer and a date that translates to 1695 A.D. Carved on the reverse side is a rosette flanked by poppy flowers and foliate detail. This is the only known carved and dated emerald of the Mogul period.

The Mogul emerald was featured on the cover of the Summer 1981 issue of Gems & Gemology. This issue also marked the first of 66 (and counting) G&G cover shots by photographers Harold and Erica Van Pelt of Los Angeles.
