"A Foundation for Grading the Overall Cut Quality of Round Brilliant Cut Diamonds" (Fall 2004): The third installment of GIA's research on diamond cut. Describes the authors' use of observation testing and introduces the GIA diamond cut grading system, which provides a single overall cut quality grade for standard round brilliants. "Liddicoatite Tourmaline from Anjanabonoina, Madagascar" (Spring 2002): Explores the world's primary source of this remarkable calcium-rich lithium tourmaline, named in honor of Richard T. Liddicoat.

“Modeling the Appearance of the Round Brilliant Cut Diamond: An Analysis of Fire, and More About Brilliance” (Fall 2001): GIA’s second major research article on diamond cut.

"Gem News: Another Tourmaline Source in Namibia" (Spring 1998): Gem News report on slightly bluish green tourmalines reportedly found near Windhoek, Namibia.

“A Contribution to Understanding the Effect of Blue Fluorescence on the Appearance of Diamonds” (Winter 1997): Addresses the longstanding controversy over how fluorescence affects the color appearance and transparency of gem diamonds.

"Multicolored Bismuth-Bearing Tourmaline from Lundazi, Zambia" (Fall 1997): Reports on a new deposit and documents the unusual composition and other properties of this tourmaline.

"Gem News: [Demantoid Garnets] from Namibia" (Fall 1997): Gem News report on two demantoid garnets from a new locality in Namibia.

“An Update on Filled Diamonds: Identification and Durability” (Fall 1994): Focused on fracture-filling products from three major commercial sources and described practical techniques for identifying them using standard gemological equipment

“Heat Treating the Sapphires of Rock Creek Montana” (Winter 1993): A comprehensive study of the use of heat treatment to change color in sapphire.

"Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy to Measure Radioactivity in Gemstones" (Summer 1992): Reviews the use of this method to detect the type and quantity of radionuclides present in radioactive gemstones.

"Gemstone Irradiation and Radioactivity" (Winter 1988): Reviews the basic characteristics of radiation and radioactivity, sources of radiation in the earth and in the laboratory, the radiation treatment of gemstones in particular, and the detection and measurement of radiation.

“Gem Pegmatites of Minas Gerais, Brazil: Exploration, Occurrence, and Aquamarine Deposits" (Summer 1984): Reviews the exploration, occurrence, and the mining methods for pegmatite gemstones in Minas Gerais, with an emphasis on aquamarine. (Companion articles on Minas Gerais by the author were published in the Spring 1985, Summer 1985, and Spring 1988 issues.)
